The Search for a Great Bread – Orange Cranberry Bread
In my previous post, I mentioned that I wanted to get a little wild with Henry, my bread machine, and make some more interesting flavors of bread.
My first attempt was with orange, cranberry bread. I wanted the bread to be orange flavored and have bright, festive cranberries sprinkled throughout it.
The dream was nice.
The reality – not so much.
Without referring to my kitchen bible, The Joy of Cooking, I made hurtful assumptions and learned a hard lesson. I assumed that creating an orange flavored bread was as simple as adding orange extract and a little orange peel. I also assumed I could just throw those festive, flavorful cranberries in there with the rest of the ingredients and expect the perfect loaf of orange cranberry bread.
What I got was a loaf of bread with a pink tinge and not one recognizable cranberry. I could not identify an orange flavor and the texture was that of a brick.
Into the trash can with that one!
Back to the drawing board.
I’m still at the drawing board on that one. I’ll let you know when I figure it out.
